Environment and welfare

Here at Rookery farm we are passionate about the environment on our farm and about environmental issues as a whole – countrywide and worldwide.

We are determined to do as much as we possibly can to promote bio- diversity and wildlife conservation on our small farm, whilst still producing quality organic food. Being an organic farm we do not use any herbicides, insecticides or artificial fertilizers. Our aim is to farm alongside nature.

Over the past 25 years, we’ve been committed to sustainable farming practices. We’ve planted trees and hedges, and created areas of the farm that are left untouched to encourage biodiversity. Our fields are re-seeded with species-rich leys and we graze our cows strategically to open up the grassland. 

We leave as many plants as possible (including thistles and other “weeds”) that have seed heads to provide as much feed as possible for the wild birds through the winter.

Space and habitat is also available for a local bee keeper to keep his bee hives on the farm.

To support wildlife, we’ve allowed plants to seed, planted winter wild bird seed mixes, and let hedges grow freely. We’ve also created wetland habitats by digging ponds and allowing reeds to colonise.

To reduce our environmental impact, we’ve installed ground and roof solar panels to generate electricity, we use electric vehicles for local deliveries, and collect rainwater for various purposes. We use fully bio-degradable packaging for all our eggs and have also implemented recycling programs for packaging materials and farm plastic wrap.

We believe that small steps can lead to big changes. By embracing sustainable practices and working in harmony with nature, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
